Con Edison Cuts Voltage as Heat Wave Strains New York Power Grid

As triple-digit heat blankets the region, Con Edison has initiated an 8% voltage reduction across parts of Manhattan, the Bronx, and Westchester. The utility is urging customers to curb energy-intensive appliance use while crews scramble to stabilize the grid and prevent further cascading outages during this period of peak demand.

In the Riverdale neighborhood of the Bronx, the utility resorted to temporary power cuts for some residents to avoid more extensive, long-term failures. The company's internal tracker recently reported 10,903 customers without service as the heat wave pushed infrastructure to its functional limits.

Regional strain extends beyond New York, with grid manager PJM Interconnection forecasting Thursday usage at 166,241 megawatts against a total capacity of 172,780 megawatts. If realized, this demand would surpass the current all-time summer peak of 165,563 megawatts established in 2006. Officials continue to monitor the balance between scheduled capacity and the surging load across the eastern interconnection.
