Toss Launches Blockchain Pilot for Won-Linked Stablecoins

South Korean financial giant Toss has entered a three-month trial with Optimism and Sunnyside Labs to determine if public blockchain infrastructure can handle institutional payment demands. The project centers on testing whether a won-linked stablecoin can thrive under strict local regulatory compliance and privacy standards.

The collaboration leverages Optimism’s OP Stack to build a dedicated financial network, moving beyond the limitations of shared public chains. By integrating Sunnyside Labs' Privacy Boost technology, the team aims to solve the inherent transparency issues of public ledgers, ensuring that sensitive transaction data remains confidential while still allowing for required anti-money laundering and customer identification checks.

For Toss, which currently serves 30 million users and supports half a million merchants, the experiment is a strategic step toward integrating blockchain into its broader payment ecosystem. The technical assessment will focus on whether this infrastructure can maintain high transaction volumes and institutional-grade security. If successful, the pilot could provide a blueprint for major financial institutions to adopt Ethereum-based Layer 2 solutions for local currency services without sacrificing privacy or performance.
