Brookdale Senior Living Shares Slide Despite Occupancy Gains

A 6.5% drop in after-hours trading greeted Brookdale Senior Living on Thursday, as investors reacted to the latest occupancy data. Despite a year-to-date rally of 42%, the stock retreated to $14.29 following the company's disclosure of growth figures for the second quarter and the month of June.

Brookdale Senior Living Shares Slide Despite Occupancy Gains

The company reported a weighted average occupancy rate of 82.5% for June, marking a 200-basis-point increase compared to the same period last year. Performance within established communities followed a similar trajectory, with occupancy reaching 83%, up 90 basis points year over year. Across the broader second quarter, the weighted average occupancy settled at 82.4%. This represents a 230-basis-point improvement over the previous year and a modest 30-basis-point gain over the first quarter of this year. These metrics highlight a steady upward trend in facility usage, though the market response indicates that investors may have been anticipating stronger growth or were simply recalibrating positions following the stock's significant gains earlier in the year.
