Ripple joins x402 Foundation to standardize AI-driven payments

Autonomous software agents are rapidly moving from data exchange to financial transactions, prompting a shift in payment infrastructure. Ripple has joined the Linux Foundation’s x402 Foundation as a Premier Member, signaling a push to integrate XRP and the RLUSD stablecoin into the emerging open standard for machine-to-machine commerce.

The move aligns Ripple with industry giants like Google, Mastercard, and Coinbase, all of whom are working under the x402 governance framework. By contributing to this open standard, Ripple aims to ensure that AI agents can settle payments directly on the XRP Ledger without relying on traditional banking rails. The company has spent recent months laying this groundwork, notably launching an AI Starter Kit in June and supporting the development of the XRPL AI Hub to facilitate agent-based transaction workflows.

Evidence of adoption is already surfacing on the network. The XRPL Foundation reports that the ledger has surpassed one million agentic transactions, a milestone reflecting increased developer testing of AI-driven payment systems. By formalizing its role within the Linux Foundation-backed x402 project, Ripple secures a seat at the table as the industry moves to transition payment processing from human-led interfaces to autonomous, software-governed systems.
