Hackers Target Kenyan President's Website With Bitcoin Ransom

William Kabogo, cabinet secretary for the Ministry of Information, Communications and the Digital Economy, confirmed that the government’s ICT Authority activated cybersecurity protocols following the incident. While the attackers threatened to leak unspecified information if the ransom remained unpaid by Saturday evening, officials maintained that no sensitive data had been compromised. Technical teams are currently working alongside the National Computer and Cybercrime Coordination Committee to restore the site and trace the entry point of the breach.

This incident adds to a troubling trend of state infrastructure attacks in Kenya, following a similar coordinated operation against multiple ministry websites in November 2025. Earlier this year, the National Computer and Cybercrime Coordination Committee reported billions of threats against critical government systems, fueling a broader effort to standardize cybercrime investigations nationwide. Although the ransom demand highlights a growing reliance on cryptocurrency in extortion plots, authorities have yet to identify a specific perpetrator or confirm if the attackers possess any legitimate government data.
