David Schwartz reflects on early crypto sales and risk management

David Schwartz, the co-creator of the XRP Ledger, recently admitted that he regrets selling his early holdings of XRP at $0.10 and Ethereum near $1. Despite the massive subsequent gains he missed, Schwartz maintains that his decision to divest was driven by a strict personal aversion to financial risk.

David Schwartz reflects on early crypto sales and risk management

Schwartz, currently serving as Ripple's CTO Emeritus, addressed his trading history in a July 20 post on X. He explained that his actions were guided by a long-standing agreement with his wife to reduce crypto exposure whenever his holdings reached new all-time highs. For Schwartz, who once held roughly 26 million XRP, the priority was locking in gains rather than betting on long-term price appreciation.

His approach to risk was starkly different from current market expectations. He previously noted that he would have held his 40,000 ETH if he believed there was even a one percent chance the asset would eventually climb to over $2,000. At the time of his sales, however, he viewed such valuations as improbable. These divestments were not a reflection of lost faith in blockchain technology, but rather a calculated effort to insulate his household wealth from the volatility of digital assets. While he continues to influence the XRP ecosystem through his role at Ripple and his contributions to the network's infrastructure, his personal portfolio remains significantly less exposed to cryptocurrencies than it was in the industry's early years.
