Telegram to Launch Fee-Free Crypto Wallet for Billion-User Base

Pavel Durov has unveiled plans to integrate a non-custodial Gram wallet directly into Telegram, promising fee-free cryptocurrency transfers for the messaging app’s one billion monthly users. The move marks the most ambitious self-custody rollout to date, effectively embedding decentralized finance tools into the daily experience of a massive global audience.

The proposed wallet allows users to maintain control over their assets without relying on intermediaries, a shift from traditional custodial services. By housing the feature within the messaging interface, Telegram removes the friction of external app downloads. While the company has confirmed a summer launch window, critical details regarding network cost coverage, regional availability, and security protocols remain undisclosed.

This integration coincides with the rebranding of Toncoin to Gram, a nod to the original 2018 project that faced a high-profile shutdown by the US Securities and Exchange Commission. Following a $1.2 billion settlement in 2020, Telegram initially stepped back, but has since deepened its ties to The Open Network. Beyond personal transactions, the ecosystem is expanding to include Agentic Wallets, which enable AI-driven bots to execute financial tasks under user-defined spending limits. As Telegram moves to scale these tools, the industry is watching to see how the platform balances its massive distribution power with the complexities of regulatory compliance and on-chain security.
