DOJ Targets $25M in Crypto Linked to International Fraud Networks

The U.S. Department of Justice has moved to forfeit more than $25 million in cryptocurrency tied to five distinct international fraud operations. These cases, which targeted victims across the United States and Canada through elaborate investment and romance scams, highlight the reach of syndicates operating out of Southeast Asia.

DOJ Targets $25M in Crypto Linked to International Fraud Networks

Prosecutors allege that criminal networks routed stolen funds through complex money laundering channels based in China, Malaysia, and Cambodia. By utilizing civil forfeiture proceedings, the Justice Department aims to secure these assets for potential victim compensation. This latest recovery contributes to the over $800 million amassed by the Scam Center Strike Force, an initiative established in November 2025 by U.S. Attorney Jeanine Ferris Pirro to dismantle global cyber-fraud infrastructure.

The investigations reveal a recurring pattern of exploitation. One primary case involves $12.1 million linked to romance scams that ensnared over 200 victims, while another seeks $10.4 million connected to fraudulent investment platforms identified in late 2024. Additional complaints detail smaller, localized losses within the National Capital Region, including a recovery scam that demanded fees from victims already defrauded of their savings. Federal investigators now rely heavily on blockchain forensics to map these illicit wallet transfers, effectively intercepting funds before they disappear into untraceable offshore accounts.
