S&P and Pantera Launch Revenue-Focused Crypto Index Excluding Bitcoin

S&P Dow Jones Indices and Pantera Capital have unveiled an 18-asset benchmark that strips away Bitcoin and XRP, favoring blockchain networks based on protocol revenue. By shifting the focus from market capitalization to tangible fee generation, the index aims to mirror traditional equity metrics for professional digital asset portfolios.

S&P and Pantera Launch Revenue-Focused Crypto Index Excluding Bitcoin

The S&P Pantera Digital Asset Index prioritizes networks that collect fees from transactions and decentralized applications. According to S&P Dow Jones Indices CEO Kathy Clay, Bitcoin failed to qualify because it functions as a store of value rather than a revenue-generating protocol under the benchmark's specific criteria. While Bitcoin rewards miners through block subsidies and transaction fees, the index methodology explicitly targets platforms with measurable economic activity across their underlying infrastructure.

Ether, BNB, Solana, TRON, and Hyperliquid currently occupy the top five positions. Unlike standard benchmarks where Bitcoin often commands a weighting of 75% or higher, this index uses a hybrid approach: protocol revenue dictates eligibility and ranking, while adjusted market capitalization determines the final weight of each asset. To maintain stability, the largest constituent is capped at 35%, with other holdings limited to 20%.

This launch reflects a broader trend among institutional managers seeking to diversify crypto exposure beyond simple market-cap-weighted products. As firms like Franklin Templeton and Hashdex expand their offerings, the S&P Pantera model signals a shift toward evaluating blockchain projects through the lens of institutional-grade financial performance rather than speculative price action. The index will undergo quarterly rebalancing to account for fluctuations in network usage and liquidity.
