IBM Acquires HRL Laboratories to Accelerate Quantum Scaling

General Motors and Boeing are offloading their joint venture, HRL Laboratories, to IBM in a move designed to fast-track quantum computing breakthroughs. While the financial terms remain confidential, the deal marks a significant consolidation of research assets as IBM races to deploy a large-scale quantum system by 2029.

IBM Acquires HRL Laboratories to Accelerate Quantum Scaling

The acquisition integrates HRL’s specialized research into IBM’s existing quantum ecosystem, focusing on the industrialization of quantum sensing and material science. Jay Gambetta, IBM’s director of research, noted that the team will expand the company’s current reach in quantum innovation. Despite the change in ownership, both Boeing and GM will maintain ongoing partnerships with IBM to explore quantum applications in their respective fields.

This transaction follows IBM’s recent push to secure its hardware supply chain, including the formation of the Anderon foundry. Supported by a $1 billion federal investment and matching internal funds, the foundry aims to mass-produce the silicon wafers required for quantum processors. With the HRL deal expected to close by the third quarter, CEO Arvind Krishna continues to steer the firm toward a functional, large-scale quantum machine within the next five years.
