BMW and Toyota Recall 318,000 Vehicles Over Fire Hazard

Over 318,000 BMW and Toyota Supra vehicles are facing a safety recall following reports that faulty starter motors can overheat and potentially ignite. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration warned that the defect poses a fire risk, prompting an urgent expansion of a previous repair initiative covering models from 2021 through 2026.

The recall affects a wide range of popular models, including the 2 Series, 3 Series, 4 Series, 5 Series, X3, X4, and Z4, alongside the 2023-2024 Toyota Supra, which is manufactured by BMW. According to federal regulators, internal wear on the starter motor component serves as the primary catalyst for the overheating issue.

To address the hazard, dealerships are instructed to replace the affected starter motors at no cost to owners. The manufacturer plans to begin mailing official notification letters in late August to alert drivers of the necessary repairs. This campaign significantly broadens the scope of a smaller recall initiated earlier this year as evidence of the component failure continues to mount across the production line.
