Brent Crude Surge Puts Fed’s Inflation Progress at Risk

As Brent crude prices breach the $100 threshold, economist Peter Schiff is warning that a sharp energy rebound could derail the cooling inflation trend seen in June. The rapid climb, fueled by Red Sea shipping disruptions, threatens to reverse recent gains just as the Federal Reserve prepares for its upcoming policy meeting.

Brent Crude Surge Puts Fed’s Inflation Progress at Risk

The June Consumer Price Index offered a rare moment of relief, with headline inflation dropping 0.4%—a decline largely driven by a 5.7% dip in energy costs. However, that momentum has stalled. Brent crude recently spiked 7% to $100.71, driven by Houthi attacks on Saudi tankers and a blockade of the Bab el-Mandeb Strait. Schiff contends that if oil prices sustain this 43% recovery from recent lows, the July CPI report may provide a significantly more aggressive reading than the previous month.

Energy infrastructure remains a flashpoint for global markets. Iranian exports have effectively stalled amid the conflict, leading Goldman Sachs analysts to speculate that Brent could climb toward $120 if supply routes remain compromised. Despite diplomatic tension, Secretary of State Marco Rubio noted that meaningful progress with Iran remains elusive, keeping traders on edge regarding potential infrastructure damage.

For the Federal Reserve, the timing complicates an already delicate mandate. Fed Governor Christopher Waller has previously signaled that multiple months of soft data are required to confirm a shift toward the 2% target. Market sentiment reflects this uncertainty; while traders favor a pause at the July 28–29 meeting, the probability of a quarter-point rate hike has jumped from 10% earlier in the month to 37.9%. With the next official inflation report not due until August 12, policymakers must decide whether June’s cooling trend was a structural pivot or a temporary reprieve.
