EnerSys Secures $150 Million Federal Grant for Lithium Plant

Beyond the Department of Energy award, the project has garnered a separate $200 million incentive package from state and local authorities in South Carolina and Greenville County. EnerSys intends to utilize the site to reach an initial production capacity of 1 gigawatt hour, specifically targeting the specialized needs of the defense sector.

Chief Executive Shawn O'Connell noted the facility is designed to fortify a domestic supply chain, answering the call for more secure, U.S.-based industrial resources. While the broader market for lithium continues to surge due to the rapid expansion of artificial intelligence, data centers, and electric vehicle infrastructure, the company remains focused on this specific defense-oriented timeline. Construction is currently slated to break ground in the first half of fiscal 2028.
