Brazil Police Freeze R$1 Billion in Crypto-Linked Drug Probe

A sweeping federal operation across four Brazilian states has dismantled a transnational drug trafficking network accused of funneling 6.5 tons of cocaine to Europe. By utilizing shell companies, luxury real estate, and specialized crypto brokers, the organization allegedly laundered R$1 billion in illicit proceeds before the crackdown triggered mass arrests.

Dubbed Operation Commodity, the mission saw 13 preventive arrest warrants and 44 search and seizure orders executed on Thursday. Federal agents, supported by the Integrated Force to Combat Organized Crime, confirmed the arrest of nine suspects. In one confrontation in Igaratá, São Paulo, a suspect died after opening fire on officers attempting to serve a warrant.

Investigators mapped a sophisticated logistics chain stretching from South America to Asia and Europe. Since 2021, the group allegedly bypassed customs inspections by concealing cocaine within shipments of coffee, cement, and mortar, often using chemical alterations to evade detection. To legitimize their profits, the traffickers integrated digital assets into a traditional money-laundering toolkit that included luxury assets and front companies. While the Federal Police have not specified which cryptocurrencies were involved, the case highlights the growing reliance on digital brokers to obscure the movement of criminal capital. The investigation remains open as authorities work to untangle the group's remaining cross-border financial ties.
