Metaplanet Eyes Bitcoin-Backed Bonds via New Securities Arm

Metaplanet is preparing to issue Bitcoin-backed bonds offering annual yields between 4% and 6%, leveraging its recent acquisition of Siiibo Securities to establish a regulated platform for corporate debt. The move signals a shift for the firm from a passive Bitcoin holder to a provider of specialized financial products.

The company’s strategy centers on the 2.1 billion yen acquisition of Siiibo Securities, which provided a Type I Financial Instruments Business Operator license from Japan’s Financial Services Agency. By launching Metaplanet Securities, the firm can now structure and distribute financial instruments that would otherwise take months of regulatory approval to develop. Benchmark analyst Mark Palmer notes that investors have largely overlooked the significance of this infrastructure, treating the company primarily as a proxy for Bitcoin price action rather than an emerging capital markets player.

Under the proposed model, Metaplanet intends to support other companies in issuing debt to finance their own Bitcoin purchases. The long-term roadmap includes moving these "Bitbonds" on-chain, utilizing stablecoin settlement, and fostering a secondary market. This initiative, dubbed Project Nova, currently involves a joint study with JPYC and Progmat to explore how Bitcoin could serve as collateral for digital corporate bonds. While Benchmark maintains a Buy rating with a 405 yen price target, the specific terms, collateral ratios, and launch dates for these instruments remain unconfirmed as the firm continues to navigate Japanese regulatory requirements.
