Fanatics Secures Regulatory Backbone for Prediction Markets

Fanatics reached an agreement on July 27 to acquire Water Street Labs and CX Clearinghouse from BGC Group. By bringing these CFTC-registered entities in-house, the sports platform gains direct control over its own exchange and clearing infrastructure, marking a significant pivot away from reliance on third-party partners for its prediction markets.

Fanatics Secures Regulatory Backbone for Prediction Markets

The acquisition grants Fanatics a designated contract market and a derivatives clearing organization, both essential for listing and settling event contracts under federal oversight. Water Street Labs, which received its CFTC designation on July 16, will serve as the primary exchange, while CX Clearinghouse handles the settlement process. This move follows Fanatics' earlier acquisition of Paragon Global Markets in 2025, effectively consolidating the core components needed to operate independently in the sports-linked prediction space.

Beyond the infrastructure purchase, Fanatics and BGC Group intend to collaborate on new data products that merge retail betting sentiment with BGC’s institutional financial analytics. While the companies suggest this could bridge the gap between consumer trading and professional markets, no specific release dates or pricing models have been established. Fanatics currently operates in 23 states and four U.S. territories, and the company stated that owning these firms will allow for a broader range of event listings.

Despite the regulatory upgrade, the path forward remains complex. The acquisition does not shield Fanatics from the ongoing legal friction between federal derivatives oversight and state-level gambling regulations. As competitors like Coinbase and Robinhood navigate their own expansion strategies, Fanatics faces the same challenge of balancing CFTC compliance with local consumer-protection laws. The deal remains subject to final closing procedures and necessary ownership filings before the first contracts can be listed under the new internal structure.
