Visa to Cut 2,600 Jobs in Major Efficiency Drive

Visa is eliminating 7% of its global workforce, amounting to roughly 2,600 positions, as the payments giant shifts resources toward high-growth sectors. The reduction, which targets technology and product divisions, reflects a broader industry trend of reallocating capital to prioritize AI-driven productivity over traditional headcount expansion.

CEO Ryan McInerney framed the layoffs as a necessary evolution to maintain the firm’s competitive edge. In a staff memo, he emphasized that the decision aims to unlock funding for reinvestment in emerging opportunities, citing AI as a primary catalyst for accelerating product development and streamlining internal operations. The cuts arrive just months after rival Mastercard reduced its own staff by 4% to better align its investment portfolio.

Despite the scale of the reduction, market observers remain largely unfazed. Analysts at Evercore ISI characterized the move as a strategic recalibration rather than a sign of systemic distress, noting that Visa continues to benefit from a resilient business model tied to transaction volumes rather than credit risk. With a market capitalization exceeding $683 billion, the firm maintains a dominant position across 200 countries, even as it faces pressure to demonstrate agility in an increasingly automated financial landscape.
