Aecon Group Secures 20-Year Ontario Battery Storage Contract

A consortium led by Aecon has finalized a deal with Ontario’s grid operator to construct a 150-megawatt battery storage facility in Norfolk County. The project, slated for completion in 2030, aims to bolster regional energy stability while integrating renewable power sources into the provincial grid through a long-term service agreement.

The Simcoe Battery Project General Partnership—a collaboration between Aecon, Six Nations of the Grand River Development, the Mississaugas of the Credit Business, Sitka Power, and NRStor—will manage the 1,200 megawatt-hour installation. Under the terms of the 20-year contract with the Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO), the partners will provide critical storage capacity, earning revenue through capacity payments and the sale of ancillary services to the grid.

Beyond its role as an equity partner, Aecon will act as the exclusive provider for engineering, procurement, and construction for the balance of plant works. This infrastructure development represents a strategic push to modernize Ontario's energy network, ensuring the system can handle the intermittency of renewable generation as demand grows.
