Crypto Exchanges See TradFi Perpetual Open Interest Hit $2 Billion

Open interest in perpetual contracts tracking stocks, metals, and oil has surged past $2 billion since late May, according to CryptoQuant data. This rapid growth highlights a strategic pivot by major crypto platforms, which are now leveraging their 24/7 trading infrastructure to compete directly with traditional, time-restricted financial markets.

Crypto Exchanges See TradFi Perpetual Open Interest Hit $2 Billion

These products function similarly to standard crypto derivatives, utilizing funding payments to anchor prices to underlying assets without a fixed expiration date. The shift is marked by intense market concentration: Binance, Bybit, and Gate currently command approximately 70% of this emerging segment. Binance alone holds roughly $720 million in open interest, mirroring its dominant position in the broader $65 billion cryptocurrency perpetual market.

While the expansion of TradFi-linked contracts is significant, they still represent only about 3% of the total crypto derivatives landscape. The growth trajectory for these assets contrasts with the wider crypto market, which has seen a 20% decline in open interest from recent peaks. Analysts suggest this contraction reflects broader deleveraging, whereas the capital flowing into TradFi perpetuals indicates a persistent investor appetite for continuous, round-the-clock exposure to conventional assets.

Regulatory landscapes remain a critical differentiator. While offshore exchanges dominate the TradFi perpetual space, US markets are evolving under a distinct framework. Coinbase and Kalshi have begun introducing regulated, continuous-trading products, though these remain subject to strict CFTC oversight. For now, the global expansion of these contracts serves as a bridge, testing whether crypto exchanges can successfully siphon liquidity from conventional trading venues by removing the barriers of market hours.
