Inside the Mind of LVMH Billionaire Bernard Arnault

Bernard Arnault, the 77-year-old architect of the LVMH empire, rarely breaks his silence. In a rare 90-minute appearance on the French podcast LEGEND, the man behind Dior and Louis Vuitton pulled back the curtain on his formative advice to Steve Jobs, his regrets over Netflix, and his direct lobbying of Donald Trump.

Inside the Mind of LVMH Billionaire Bernard Arnault

Arnault’s conversation with host Guillaume Pley offered a candid look at a career defined by long-term vision. He recalled advising a young Steve Jobs during the launch of Apple’s retail footprint, urging the tech founder to secure prime real estate similar to Louis Vuitton’s flagship stores. Jobs later conceded that while his phones were revolutionary, Arnault’s products held superior longevity, famously remarking that Dom Perignon would outlast the iPhone by a century.

Beyond retail, Arnault shared insights into his investment strategy and family legacy. He admitted to liquidating a 20% stake in Netflix far too early, missing out on a tenfold gain, though he chalked up other successes to pure chance, such as a windfall of Google shares from a dissolved venture fund. Regarding his five children, all of whom hold senior roles at LVMH, Arnault emphasized a strict meritocracy. He claimed he personally tutored them in mathematics during their youth to ensure they possessed the discipline required to maintain his empire, distancing them from the typical trappings of inherited wealth.

His approach to business remains rooted in an aversion to traditional marketing. Arnault maintains that true luxury houses should rely on the inherent quality of their creations rather than external promotion, often acting as a self-appointed visual merchandiser during impromptu store visits. Perhaps most surreal was his account of dining with Donald Trump on the day of the former president's second assassination attempt. Arnault described a composed Trump dismissing the danger with a simple "2-0" before shifting to business—specifically, the ongoing lobbying efforts Arnault employs to secure tariff exemptions for French goods.
