Intesa Sanpaolo Raises Profit Target After Strong Second Quarter

With second-quarter net income climbing to €2.8 billion, Italy's largest lender, Intesa Sanpaolo, has surpassed market expectations and lifted its annual profit forecast. The bank, which recently initiated a €34.5 billion bid for Monte dei Paschi di Siena, now expects to exceed its previous €10 billion profit target for 2026.

Intesa Sanpaolo Raises Profit Target After Strong Second Quarter

The Milan-based institution comfortably cleared the €2.5 billion forecast set by analysts for the April-June period. This momentum arrives as Intesa aggressively pivots toward a new wave of consolidation in the Italian banking sector. After remaining on the sidelines during earlier market shifts, the bank launched its substantial cash-and-share offer for Monte dei Paschi in early June.

The proposed acquisition of the rival lender marks a significant escalation in Italy's financial landscape. Having previously seen Monte dei Paschi complete its own €13.5 billion acquisition of Mediobanca in September 2025, the market is now recalibrating expectations for Intesa’s growth trajectory as the bank signals higher earnings potential in the coming years.
