Samsung SDS pivots to stablecoin infrastructure with Dunamu partnership

South Korea’s Samsung SDS is moving beyond passive investment, leveraging its recent stake in Dunamu to build the backbone for next-generation digital finance. President Lee Joon-hee confirmed the company is actively developing stablecoin infrastructure and AI-powered payment systems, marking a shift toward deep integration with the operator of the Upbit exchange.

The strategic alignment follows a 612.8 billion won acquisition earlier this year, where Samsung SDS secured a 1% stake in Dunamu. Rather than treating the move as a financial play, leadership intends to fuse Samsung’s existing cloud, cybersecurity, and AI capabilities with Dunamu’s blockchain expertise. This collaboration aims to establish comprehensive financial systems for virtual assets, moving Samsung’s digital asset roadmap from consumer-facing wallet features to foundational market infrastructure.

This initiative coincides with a period of aggressive expansion for Samsung’s cloud division, which reported a 75% surge in external business revenue during the second quarter. The company is scaling its AI infrastructure rapidly, targeting a capacity increase from 110 megawatts to 800 megawatts by 2031. This hardware growth underpins the broader digital asset strategy, providing the compute power necessary for large-scale blockchain and payment processing. While the firm remains cautious about external consortiums, such as the Open Standard OUSD project, its internal roadmap indicates a clear commitment to proprietary infrastructure development.
