Canadian Crypto Ownership Hits 25% Amid Regulatory Clampdown

One in four Canadians now holds cryptocurrency, marking a sharp increase from the 10% recorded in 2023. While adoption accelerates, the Ontario Securities Commission reports that widespread confusion regarding platform registration and consumer protections leaves many investors exposed to significant financial risk.

Canadian Crypto Ownership Hits 25% Amid Regulatory Clampdown

The survey of 2,360 adults conducted by the Ontario Securities Commission reveals that 59% of the population is now aware of digital assets. Despite this rising familiarity, only half of current crypto owners verify whether their trading platform is officially registered. This oversight is particularly concerning to regulators, as crypto holdings lack the insurance and recovery mechanisms typical of traditional bank deposits.

Regulators are balancing this surge in interest against a push for tighter oversight. While firms like Coinbase look to expand their "Everything Exchange" model into the country, Ottawa is moving to restrict specific high-risk channels. The federal government has signaled plans to ban crypto ATMs, citing their frequent use by scammers to facilitate irreversible illicit transfers. Simultaneously, new legislation aims to prohibit digital asset donations to political groups to mitigate risks of foreign interference. These developments suggest a bifurcated regulatory future: one that permits mainstream financial integration while aggressively policing channels prone to fraud.
