Tesla weighs China unit divestment to clear path for SpaceX merger

Tesla executives have begun preparing for a potential separation of the company’s Chinese operations, a move reportedly aimed at facilitating a merger with SpaceX. Advisers are currently evaluating options ranging from a total sale or spin-off to a complete closure of the Shanghai-based business, according to recent reports.

Tesla weighs China unit divestment to clear path for SpaceX merger

Gigafactory Shanghai serves as the cornerstone of Tesla’s global manufacturing strategy, producing over 950,000 vehicles annually and acting as the primary export hub for Europe and Asia-Pacific markets. Despite its output, the facility faces mounting competition from domestic rivals like BYD. Elon Musk recently acknowledged the possibility of combining the two entities, noting an increasing operational overlap. SpaceX President Gwynne Shotwell echoed this sentiment, suggesting that consolidation could streamline management for the billionaire’s various ventures.

Financial analysts remain skeptical regarding the feasibility of such a deal. JPMorgan experts highlight significant regulatory hurdles, specifically in China, where SpaceX’s deep-rooted ties to the United States government and associated national security concerns could trigger intense scrutiny. While SpaceX recently achieved a valuation of $1.48 trillion following a successful market debut, and Tesla holds a market capitalization of $1.22 trillion, the path to a combined corporate entity remains fraught with geopolitical and administrative complexity.
