Hashdex to Liquidate $14.7M Bitcoin ETF

Struggling to gain traction in a crowded market, Hashdex is shutting down its spot Bitcoin ETF, known by the ticker DEFI. The firm confirmed the fund will cease trading on NYSE Arca next month, marking a retreat for one of the smaller players in the competitive U.S. crypto asset space.

Hashdex to Liquidate $14.7M Bitcoin ETF

The fund, which held roughly $14.7 million in assets as of July 30, will stop trading after the market closes on Aug. 17. Following this date, Hashdex will halt creation orders from authorized participants and begin the process of delisting the fund from the exchange. Investors retain the ability to trade shares through brokers until the final session, though liquidity may tighten as the closure nears.

Shareholders who hold their positions beyond the final trading day will not receive Bitcoin. Instead, the firm will liquidate the portfolio’s holdings and distribute the remaining proceeds in cash, net of liabilities and expenses. Hashdex expects to issue these payments around Aug. 28. The final distribution amount remains subject to Bitcoin price volatility during the wind-down period, and the process may trigger taxable events for U.S. investors.

DEFI, which transitioned from a futures-based product to a spot Bitcoin ETF in March 2024, struggled to compete with larger issuers that launched earlier in the year. Despite maintaining a 0.25% expense ratio, the fund failed to attract the volume necessary for long-term viability. This move does not affect the firm’s broader strategy; the Hashdex Nasdaq CME Crypto Index ETF, which manages over $206 million, will remain active and continue its operations.
