Wells Fargo to Launch Blockchain-Based Tokenized Deposits

Wells Fargo will introduce tokenized deposits this fall, offering corporate clients the ability to settle funds across borders outside of traditional banking hours. The pilot program, initially supporting transactions between U.S. dollars and British pounds, signals a shift toward 24/7 programmable payments within a regulated, blockchain-based framework.

The initiative utilizes the bank’s proprietary blockchain platform to represent customer funds as digital tokens. Unlike traditional transfers hindered by market-hour constraints and settlement lags, this system allows for near-continuous operations. Chief Financial Officer Mike Santomassimo identified the move as a critical expansion of the bank’s payment infrastructure, with further currencies and markets to be added based on institutional demand through 2027.

By keeping these assets within the bank’s custodial control, Wells Fargo maintains standard compliance checks while adopting the speed of decentralized finance. The bank joins peers like JPMorgan and Citigroup in building out blockchain-based settlement tools for institutional use. This development follows a March trademark filing for “WFUSD,” which hinted at the bank’s interest in digital asset processing, though officials have yet to confirm if that branding will apply to the new deposit service.

Beyond payment technology, Wells Fargo has quietly increased its footprint in the broader digital asset space. Recent regulatory filings reveal a 125% increase in the bank’s position in Strategy, alongside new investments linked to Ethereum and Solana. While these portfolio adjustments remain separate from the tokenized deposit project, they underscore a broader strategic pivot toward blockchain integration. The bank has not yet disclosed specific pricing, transaction caps, or eligibility criteria for the initial pilot participants.
