Move-to-earn platform Step App to cease operations on August 21

Step App will shutter all global services on August 21, ending a four-year run that once saw the project enlist Olympic champion Usain Bolt as its global ambassador. The move-to-earn platform provided no specific financial or regulatory reasoning for the sudden closure, leaving users to scramble to secure their digital assets.

The project, which incentivized physical activity through its native FITFI and KCAL tokens, has instructed its community to unstake locked assets and manage exchange positions before the August 21 deadline. Despite reporting over one million downloads and billions of steps tracked during its tenure, the team has not offered a transition plan, buyer, or restructuring process for the platform.

The shutdown arrives amid a wave of exchange delistings that have severely restricted liquidity for the project’s FITFI token. Bithumb is set to halt trading on August 18, with withdrawals closing on September 18, while KuCoin has already removed the asset and established an August 31 withdrawal deadline. These exchange-specific timelines operate independently of the project's own cutoff, complicating the exit process for remaining holders.

At its 2022 peak, FITFI reached a high of $0.7319, marking a significant increase from its $0.0049 public sale price. However, the project's later years were marked by a decline in market activity and a series of warnings from exchanges regarding falling trade volumes. With the service closure imminent, the team has yet to clarify the status of the marketplace, bridge, or future token utility, urging users to rely solely on verified channels to manage their remaining holdings.
