Ethereum Foundation recruits AI specialist to hunt protocol bugs

The Ethereum Foundation is seeking a protocol security researcher to integrate artificial intelligence into its defense strategy, following successful trials where autonomous agents identified genuine network vulnerabilities. This global remote role aims to bridge the gap between automated discovery and the rigorous human verification required to maintain core infrastructure integrity.

Ethereum Foundation recruits AI specialist to hunt protocol bugs

The researcher will join the Protocol Security team, tasked with auditing the execution and consensus layers, as well as the peer-to-peer networking stack and client software. Responsibilities span the development of custom fuzzing tools, hard fork reviews, and the coordination of responsible vulnerability disclosures. Candidates are expected to possess deep expertise in Ethereum specifications and proficiency in languages including Go, Rust, and Python.

This recruitment effort underscores the Foundation’s shift toward AI-assisted auditing after recent tests confirmed that AI agents could successfully pinpoint flaws, such as the panic identified in the libp2p gossipsub component, now tracked as CVE-2026-34219. However, the organization emphasizes that the primary challenge remains filtering false positives from actual threats. The new hire will formalize the workflow for reproducing these findings and assessing their real-world impact.

The search for new talent follows a significant organizational restructuring that saw the Foundation cut 54 positions and dissolve its Protocol Support team. Despite these departures, the Foundation continues to prioritize security, recently appointing researcher Pascal Caversaccio to its board. As Ethereum supports an expanding ecosystem of institutional financial products and stablecoins, the role is critical to ensuring that potential bugs are neutralized before they reach the main network.
