New York City Council Launches Inquiry Into Prediction Market Marketing

The New York City Council has launched a formal investigation into the marketing tactics of four prominent prediction market platforms, including Polymarket, Kalshi, Coinbase, and Gemini Titan, amid mounting concerns that these firms are employing deceptive, predatory advertising to entice consumers into high-risk event wagering.

New York City Council Launches Inquiry Into Prediction Market Marketing

Council Speaker Julie Menin initiated the probe after reports surfaced alleging that companies used content creators to present simulated trades as real-money transactions. The inquiry seeks to determine if current consumer protection regulations are sufficient or if new city-level legislation is required to curb practices that aggressively push bets on sports, politics, and weather. Letters sent to the companies demand detailed information on how these platforms advertise contracts to the public.

This municipal investigation remains distinct from ongoing state-level litigation, which focuses on whether these firms are operating unlicensed gambling businesses. While the council’s focus is strictly on marketing integrity, the move highlights the intensifying regulatory scrutiny facing the industry. Representatives from Polymarket, Kalshi, and Coinbase have stated they intend to cooperate with the inquiry, with Coinbase emphasizing its adherence to federal CFTC oversight.
