Metaplanet CEO Denies Sell-Off After $322 Million Bitcoin Transfer

Market speculation surrounding Metaplanet reached a fever pitch this week when trackers flagged the movement of 5,014 BTC, worth roughly $322 million, from company-linked wallets. CEO Simon Gerovich moved quickly to quell fears of a liquidation, confirming the massive transfer was merely a routine internal custody operation.

Metaplanet CEO Denies Sell-Off After $322 Million Bitcoin Transfer

The transfers, which occurred over a 24-hour period, sparked immediate concern among investors monitoring the firm’s public treasury. Gerovich addressed the activity directly on August 13, emphasizing that the company’s total holdings remain unchanged at 43,000 BTC. He noted that the entirety of the transaction cost approximately $8 in network fees, further distancing the movement from any potential exchange-based sell-off.

Because Metaplanet publishes its wallet addresses, the transfers were visible to onchain analysts in real time, leading to premature reports of a major divestment. However, the firm’s official disclosures and internal tracker confirm that no Bitcoin has been sold. The company currently ranks as the third-largest public holder of Bitcoin globally, trailing only MicroStrategy and Twenty One Capital. While the firm faces significant unrealized losses due to market volatility, with Bitcoin trading near $63,600, these figures remain mark-to-market estimates rather than realized financial hits. Metaplanet continues to pursue its aggressive long-term accumulation targets of 100,000 BTC by the end of 2026, maintaining its focus on expanding its Bitcoin-backed financial infrastructure in Japan despite the recent scrutiny.
