Metaplanet Debuts BitBonds With 200 Million Yen Private Placement

Tokyo-based Metaplanet has inaugurated its BitBonds program, securing 200 million yen through four private debt placements. The unsecured senior bonds, distributed via the company’s internal securities arm, mark a shift toward recurring fixed-income funding as the firm continues to navigate its significant Bitcoin treasury strategy.

The inaugural issuance consists of the 21st through 24th series of unsecured ordinary bonds, carrying annual interest rates between 4% and 4.3% with a three-year maturity. These instruments were placed through Metaplanet Securities, the firm’s recently acquired and rebranded subsidiary, under Japan's small-number private placement framework. While the company has previously discussed long-term ambitions involving tokenization and stablecoin settlement, these initial offerings remain traditional corporate debt without asset-backed security.

Investors in these bonds are exposed to the company’s broader financial health, which is heavily tethered to the volatility of its 43,000 BTC holdings. Although Metaplanet reported a 133.7% jump in first-half net sales to 4.94 billion yen, the company simultaneously posted a 182.77 billion yen net loss, largely driven by noncash valuation adjustments on its Bitcoin assets. CEO Simon Gerovich confirmed that the company’s Bitcoin stash remains intact following recent custodial transfers, seeking to quell market speculation regarding potential sell-offs. Looking ahead, Metaplanet intends to use BitBonds as a flexible funding channel, with future series pricing dictated by prevailing market conditions and specific capital requirements.
