The Power Players Behind SpaceX: Mapping the Top Ten Shareholders

While Elon Musk maintains a firm grip on SpaceX, recent regulatory filings have pulled back the curtain on the massive institutional and private capital backing the $2 trillion rocket manufacturer. Analysis of second-quarter portfolio disclosures reveals a concentrated circle of tech titans, sovereign wealth funds, and billionaire allies holding significant equity.

The Power Players Behind SpaceX: Mapping the Top Ten Shareholders

Elon Musk remains the dominant force, controlling approximately 49% of the company with 6.42 billion shares. Beyond the founder, the cap table is defined by long-standing loyalists and major tech conglomerates. Alphabet, which invested $900 million in 2015, holds a 4.2% stake valued at $94 billion as of June 30. Other notable positions include Valor Equity Partners, led by Musk confidant Antonio Gracias, with a 3.8% stake, and Peter Thiel’s Founders Fund, which maintains a 3.2% share of the aerospace giant.

The list of major stakeholders also reflects the reach of global capital. Fidelity Investments holds 2.3% of the company, while the Saudi Arabian Public Investment Fund maintains a 1.2% stake as part of its broader diversification strategy. Texas-based Gigafund, founded by Luke Nosek and Stephen Oskoui, holds 1.3%. Rounding out the top ten are asset manager Baron Capital, Daniel Sundheim’s D1 Capital Partners, and AI chip leader Nvidia, which holds a 0.9% stake valued at nearly $21 billion. These disclosures highlight the deep financial entrenchment of Silicon Valley elite and sovereign investors in Musk’s vision for satellite and rocket dominance.
