Visa and Nium Launch Stablecoin Settlement Pilot in Singapore

Visa has joined the Monetary Authority of Singapore’s BLOOM initiative, tapping cross-border payments provider Nium to test stablecoin settlement. The project aims to bridge the gap between traditional finance and blockchain by enabling seven-day settlement cycles for U.S. dollar and euro-backed stablecoins, bypassing the limitations of standard banking hours.

Visa and Nium Launch Stablecoin Settlement Pilot in Singapore

The pilot focuses on the settlement layer that functions behind the scenes of retail payments. By integrating regulated stablecoins into its existing network, Visa intends to provide financial institutions with faster access to funds while maintaining rigorous security and compliance controls. Unlike traditional systems restricted by banking holidays and weekends, this infrastructure seeks to create a continuous, programmable flow of capital.

Adeline Kim, Visa’s senior vice president for Global Clients and Acquirers in Asia Pacific, noted that the future of finance relies on the seamless interoperability of diverse payment networks. For Nium, the initiative builds upon existing stablecoin integrations, such as its partnership with Coinbase, which allows businesses to leverage USDC for international payouts. Amaresh Mohan, chief risk and compliance officer at Nium, emphasized that connecting established payment rails with digital currencies is becoming an essential evolution for institutional settlement. While the companies have not disclosed a specific launch timeline or participating institutions, the project marks a significant expansion of Visa’s broader strategy to support multi-chain and multi-coin settlement across its global infrastructure.
