ECB urged to adopt blockchain to secure financial dominance

To remain the bedrock of the European financial system, the European Central Bank must integrate blockchain technology directly into its operations. Isabel Schnabel argues that transitioning to an on-chain framework will allow the bank to maintain authority as private stablecoins and tokenized assets increasingly reshape how markets settle transactions.

ECB urged to adopt blockchain to secure financial dominance

Central banks worldwide face a shifting landscape where transactions migrate from traditional infrastructure to distributed digital ledgers. Schnabel, speaking at the Jackson Hole Economic Policy Symposium, warned that failure to adapt risks sidelining central bank money in favor of private alternatives. By bringing central bank currency into a tokenized environment, the institution could modernize its policy implementation and respond more effectively to market volatility.

Programming transactions on blockchain networks offers the ECB greater agility, enabling automated collateral requirements and more nuanced interest rate applications. Schnabel pointed to South Korea’s Project Hangang as a potential model for a unified ledger system where public and private money coexist. The ECB is already laying the groundwork for this transition through its Pontes initiative, which bridges distributed ledgers with existing payment systems, and the Appia project, which focuses on the long-term legal and technical architecture for a tokenized European market.
