The appearance of a market-wide breakout is deceptive. Data from the Cryptex 36-asset index reveals that capital is not rotating between sectors or assets based on individual fundamentals. Instead, price dispersion remains remarkably low—the gap between the best and worst performing assets in the index is just eight percentage points. According to Sticco, this suggests a common market factor is lifting all boats, rather than investors identifying specific value opportunities.
Institutional demand further underscores this concentration. During recent sessions, roughly nine out of every ten dollars entering regulated crypto products flowed into Bitcoin and Ethereum. While U.S. spot ETFs have seen eight consecutive days of inflows totaling $2.8 billion, Sticco warns that rising fund assets should be interpreted with caution. A significant portion of the $22 billion increase in fund net assets since mid-August stems from the appreciation of existing holdings rather than fresh institutional capital. As the market looks toward a pivotal September 15 Senate vote on the CLARITY Act, the disconnect between price movement and capital allocation highlights a fragile recovery tethered more to macroeconomic triggers than to a fundamental shift in investor behavior.
