Coinbase Expands Derivatives Access for Canadian Institutional Investors

Eligible Canadian institutional and sophisticated investors can now access 23 perpetual and dated crypto futures through Coinbase Financial Markets. The rollout includes leverage of up to 10 times on major assets like Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Solana, alongside commodity and index contracts, marking a significant expansion of the firm’s regulated derivatives footprint.

The new offerings allow participants to trade long or short positions without holding the underlying digital assets, providing a mechanism for portfolio hedging. Beyond cryptocurrencies, the platform has introduced five commodity contracts tied to gold, silver, and oil, as well as the COIN50 index. Coinbase structured these instruments in nano sizes, which reduces the capital requirements for opening positions compared to standard market contracts.

Access remains strictly limited to qualified users under international exemptions rather than general retail channels. While the platform offers up to 10x leverage, Coinbase cautions that such positions carry increased risk, noting that accounts may face liquidation if margin levels fall below required thresholds. To facilitate the launch, the exchange has implemented temporary pricing of 0.02% per trade plus a $0.11 fee per contract.

This move aligns with Coinbase’s broader strategy to consolidate its derivatives infrastructure. The company is currently transitioning institutional accounts to its Deribit platform to centralize operations, following a period where derivatives volume reached $1.03 trillion in the second quarter of 2026. While Coinbase continues to pursue full dealer registration with the Canadian Investment Regulatory Organization, this latest service expansion complements its existing infrastructure partnerships with firms like Webull Canada.
