Revolut secures conditional US banking charter

British fintech giant Revolut has cleared a critical regulatory hurdle, receiving conditional approval from the U.S. Office of the Comptroller of the Currency. This national bank charter serves as the cornerstone of the company’s ambitious strategy to establish a fully operational American banking entity by 2027.

Following the OCC decision, the firm now awaits final authorization from the FDIC and the Federal Reserve to commence full banking operations. U.S. CEO Cetin Duransoy confirmed that the new institution will be headquartered in Stamford, Connecticut, backed by an initial capital injection of approximately $95 million.

The expansion aims to broaden Revolut's reach beyond its current 80 million global customers by introducing a suite of domestic products. The upcoming bank plans to offer standard checking accounts, installment loans, and credit cards, alongside specialized foreign exchange services. Furthermore, the company intends to integrate digital asset products into its American lineup, with Duransoy noting that the launch of a stablecoin is currently in the works.
