Binance Founder Predicts Shift Toward On-Chain IPOs

Binance founder Changpeng Zhao sparked industry speculation on September 7 by declaring that initial public offerings will transition to blockchain infrastructure. While Zhao provided no specific timeline or issuer names, his prediction highlights an accelerating trend toward tokenized securities currently taking root within global financial markets.

Binance Founder Predicts Shift Toward On-Chain IPOs

The infrastructure supporting such a shift is already emerging. In April 2026, the French aerospace firm ST Group completed what is recognized as the world’s first fully tokenized IPO. By issuing equity directly through the Paris-based Lightning Stock Exchange under the European Union’s Distributed Ledger Technology Pilot Regime, the company raised €2.07 million. Unlike synthetic products that offer only price exposure, this transaction utilized blockchain-based market mechanisms for the initial offering.

Major institutional players are also integrating tokenized rails. Nasdaq and the New York Stock Exchange have secured regulatory frameworks to trade tokenized versions of conventional securities alongside their traditional counterparts. These programs utilize existing clearing institutions like the Depository Trust Company to settle trades, ensuring that tokenized assets remain integrated within national market systems. Meanwhile, firms like Cantor Fitzgerald and Securitize are developing regulated systems to support future on-chain capital raises while maintaining standard underwriting and compliance protocols.

Despite this progress, the transition faces significant legal and practical hurdles. The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission maintains that tokenization does not bypass registration or investor protection requirements. Furthermore, market experts warn of structural differences between issuer-backed tokens and third-party synthetic instruments, which may lack dividends or voting rights. As the sector matures, the focus remains on the upcoming October 2026 launch of DTCC’s tokenization service and the potential adoption of blockchain issuance by a major public corporation.
