Sherritt International Faces Liquidity Crisis Amid Cuba Sanctions

The survival of Sherritt International hangs in the balance as the Canadian miner struggles to secure emergency financing following a wave of U.S. sanctions. With its operations in Cuba under intense regulatory pressure, the company is now forced into urgent negotiations to restructure its mounting debt obligations and avoid a total collapse.

The company confirmed that its status as a going concern is increasingly uncertain due to severe liquidity constraints. A U.S. executive order issued in May intensified restrictions on firms doing business in Cuba, effectively triggering a default event within the miner's revolving credit facility. This development threatens to accelerate the company's debt accumulation, potentially forcing immediate repayment to holders of at least one-quarter of its outstanding senior secured notes.

Beyond these financial hurdles, the firm has already shuttered its metals refining operations in Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta, to preserve remaining resources. While leadership continues to pursue a comprehensive recapitalization strategy with lenders, there remains no guarantee that these discussions will yield a viable path forward for the organization.
