Boeing Expands 737 MAX Maintenance With Landing Gear Exchange

American Airlines has received the first overhauled landing gear assemblies for a 737 MAX, marking the formal integration of the aircraft into Boeing’s component exchange program. This shift allows carriers to swap out heavy hardware rather than committing to costly, time-consuming overhauls that often keep planes grounded for extended periods.

The program provides airlines with certified main and nose gear units, eliminating the need for carriers to purchase and warehouse expensive spare parts. By utilizing Boeing’s stock of overhauled assemblies, operators gain a logistical shortcut for heavy maintenance cycles, directly addressing the pressure to minimize downtime.

William Ampofo, senior vice president of parts and distribution at Boeing Global Services, noted that the expansion aims to help operators manage maintenance costs while better aligning service schedules with flight demands. For the manufacturer, this move deepens the support infrastructure surrounding its most popular single-aisle jet, shifting the burden of inventory management away from the airline and back toward the OEM.
