DoorDash Bets $125M on Wonder to Secure Campus Dining Foothold

DoorDash is pouring $125 million into Wonder, the parent company of rival Grubhub, in a strategic maneuver to dominate institutional food services. Alongside this investment, the delivery giant reached a $300 million agreement to acquire the Grubhub campus dining division, signaling a major pivot toward closed-loop venues like stadiums and hotels.

The acquisition of the business formerly known as Tapingo grants DoorDash access to meal-ordering infrastructure at over 450 colleges and universities. By integrating this service, the company aims to scale its reach beyond residential delivery, targeting high-density environments where student kiosks and mobile apps streamline the dining experience.

For Wonder, the deal provides a significant capital injection following its recent $650 million Series D round. CEO Marc Lore intends to channel these funds into the company’s vision of an autonomous food system, prioritizing investments in robotics and menu automation. DoorDash CEO Tony Xu noted that the move is designed to reduce operational friction for universities while expanding consumer choice. The transaction remains subject to regulatory approval and is expected to close by the first half of next year.
