Argentina Joins Global Crypto Tax Reporting Network

Argentina has officially committed to the OECD’s Crypto-Asset Reporting Framework, pledging to begin the automatic exchange of digital asset transaction data by September 2029. This move aligns the nation with 77 other jurisdictions aiming to curb tax evasion by standardizing cross-border information sharing for crypto service providers.

Argentina Joins Global Crypto Tax Reporting Network

The commitment, announced by the OECD’s Global Forum on Transparency and Exchange of Information for Tax Purposes, marks a significant shift in Argentina’s regulatory landscape. While the agreement does not impose a new tax, it mandates that crypto exchanges and brokers collect specific customer data—including names, addresses, and tax identification numbers—to be shared with international authorities. Before these exchanges commence, the government must integrate the framework into its domestic legal code.

This decision follows Argentina’s recent push to formalize its crypto sector, highlighted by the 2024 implementation of a mandatory registry for virtual asset service providers. By joining the framework, the country gains a tool to track the overseas crypto holdings of its residents, a move Gaël Perraud, chair of the Global Forum, noted will provide local tax authorities with critical visibility into foreign-based transactions. While many jurisdictions, including the UK and EU member states, began their reporting cycles in 2026, Argentina’s 2029 deadline allows the nation time to build the necessary infrastructure to handle the data flow.
