Telesat and Orange Launch First European Lightspeed Satellite Gateway

Deep in the French countryside at the Bercenay-en-Othe teleport, Telesat and Orange have successfully commissioned the first European ground gateway for the Lightspeed low Earth orbit network. This infrastructure milestone marks a physical shift in the company’s push toward a global satellite constellation set for commercial launch in 2028.

The site serves as a vital terrestrial anchor, providing the necessary connectivity to bridge Telesat’s Paris hub with the upcoming fleet of 225 satellites. By establishing this foothold, the partners aim to offer specialized telecom, maritime, and defense services that allow enterprise clients direct control over their data streams. Following the announcement, Telesat shares on the Toronto exchange climbed 6.2% to 72.71 Canadian dollars, or approximately $51.98. Chief Commercial Officer Glenn Katz confirmed the installation is central to the project's long-term deployment schedule, which targets full service availability within four years.
