The instability stems from a direct challenge by Tata Trusts—the conglomerate's primary shareholder—against the board’s recent attempt to reappoint N. Chandrasekaran as chairman. Noel Tata, chair of the Trusts, labeled the move a legal nullity, arguing it violates the group’s articles of association. This rejection follows Chandrasekaran’s own resignation in August, which had initially signaled an end to his tenure.
Compounding the uncertainty, the Shapoorji Pallonji Group has proposed a massive monetization of its stake, valued at approximately 250 billion rupees. While SP Group chairman Shapoor Mistry has publicly supported the Reserve Bank of India’s push for a public listing as a path toward greater accountability, the conflicting agendas have spooked the market. On Friday, Tata Chemicals bore the brunt of the volatility with an 11% slump, while Tata Consultancy Services and Tata Technologies saw losses of 4.3% and 4.65% respectively.
