Deutsche Bank, Santander, and Clearstream are among the first institutions to onboard the platform, which currently operates on business days between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. CET. While initial settlement finality remains anchored in the existing TARGET2 system, the ECB intends to transition this function to a Eurosystem-operated DLT platform in future iterations, eventually introducing smart contract capabilities. The project represents a significant shift for the bank, which is also preparing to allocate a portion of its €23 billion own funds portfolio into highly rated, blockchain-based debt securities.
Beyond technical infrastructure, Pontes serves as a cornerstone for the Eurosystem’s broader Appia program, which seeks to build an integrated European tokenized financial system. Although separate from the bank’s retail digital euro pilot scheduled for 2027, the rollout underscores a growing commitment to maintaining central bank oversight as wholesale finance increasingly migrates to digital ledgers.
