Crypto Treasury Stocks Struggle to Outperform Underlying Assets

Only four of the 20 largest publicly traded crypto treasury companies currently trade at a premium to their token reserves, according to a DWF Ventures analysis. Most firms consistently trail the performance of the digital assets they hold, forcing investors to look beyond simple asset counts to determine true value.

Crypto Treasury Stocks Struggle to Outperform Underlying Assets

The report highlights a widening gap between market value and net asset value (mNAV), with most firms trading at a discount to their holdings. While treasury stocks occasionally outperform their underlying tokens—notably between July and September, when some companies recorded gains 15% to 40% higher than their reserves—this growth is often driven by speculative demand rather than intrinsic asset appreciation. Since the adoption of treasury strategies, buying tokens directly has historically yielded better returns than purchasing company shares.

Management decisions regarding financing and operational income are increasingly dictating stock performance. Companies trading at a premium can issue new shares to acquire more tokens, effectively increasing the backing per share. Conversely, firms trading below their asset value face dilution risks if they attempt to raise capital through common stock. To mitigate these pressures, some operators have turned to convertible debt or preferred shares, though these instruments carry long-term obligations that can strain reserves.

Diversification has emerged as a critical differentiator for investors. Bit Digital, for instance, has maintained a premium partly through its White Fiber cloud infrastructure business, which generated the majority of its second-quarter revenue. Similarly, firms like BitMine leverage staking to generate yield, while others, such as the Zcash-focused CYPH, utilize mining fleets to capture network emissions. As institutional access to direct crypto custody improves, the analysis suggests that investors are shifting focus from simple token holdings to the operational efficiency and financing strategies of the treasury managers themselves.
