Solana Pushes Alpenglow to Devnet Aiming for 150ms Finality

Solana’s Alpenglow upgrade has transitioned to the public developer network, shifting from the current 12.8-second finality window toward a 150-millisecond target. Developed by Anza, the system replaces on-chain validator vote transactions with a direct, multi-round voting mechanism designed to finalize blocks significantly faster than the existing TowerBFT consensus model.

The upgrade is now live on devnet and testnet, though the mainnet continues to operate under legacy consensus rules. By shifting vote submission away from standard block transactions, Alpenglow allows for finality after one or two voting rounds, provided that validators representing at least 80% of the stake reach an agreement. While this promises a massive speed boost, the 150-millisecond figure currently represents a target derived from simulations rather than a live-market reality.

For most application developers, the transition is seamless; software that simply sends transactions or reads balances requires no migration. However, infrastructure providers—specifically block explorers and data services—face significant adjustments. Because validator votes will no longer appear as transactions within blocks, historic volume charts will need recalibration. Furthermore, services must adapt to handle multiple candidate blocks for a single slot, ensuring that data streams correctly identify the specific block that reaches finality rather than conflating competing records. While Anza’s software roadmap previously suggested an October window for mainnet integration, no definitive activation date has been established for the production network.
