Petrobras and Cardano Prototype Blockchain Tools for Fuel Tracking

The aviation project utilizes a Book-and-Claim model to decouple the physical use of sustainable aviation fuel from its associated environmental benefits. By recording these benefits as standardized digital tokens, the system ensures that credits cannot be claimed by multiple parties. Before entering the ledger, certificates are validated against CORSIA standards. Once verified, these tokens track the fuel's journey, allowing airlines to assign specific emissions reductions to individual flights or passengers.

A second initiative targets Diesel R, a fuel produced by co-processing petroleum with vegetable oils or animal fats. The proposed digital framework creates a continuous record of production, transportation, and usage data. By centralizing these disparate logs, Petrobras aims to simplify Scope 3 emissions reporting, which often involves fragmented data from various logistics and supplier systems. Rafael Fraga, the Foundation’s Latin America business development lead, noted that the energy transition relies on the reliability of environmental data as much as the fuels themselves. Both projects remain in the research phase with no commercial rollout date confirmed.
