Fiserv Launches Digital Asset Platform With Solana-Based Stablecoin

Fiserv has officially activated its digital asset infrastructure, tapping the Solana blockchain to power the Bank of North Dakota’s new "Roughrider Coin." The dollar-backed asset, issued by VersaBank USA, is now available to more than 90 banks and credit unions across the state for secure, institutional-grade interbank settlements.

The platform integrates with the Commercial Center interface already familiar to Fiserv’s banking clients, allowing institutions to manage tokenized deposits without shifting to separate crypto-native portals. While VersaBank handles the minting, burning, and custody of the one-to-one dollar-backed tokens, Fireblocks provides the underlying multi-party computation wallets and security layers. By leveraging Solana’s Token-2022 standards, the system incorporates institutional-grade controls, including specific freeze and clawback functions.

Despite the launch, the project remains strictly permissioned. Bank of North Dakota officials confirmed that the token is not available to retail investors or the general public, serving exclusively as a tool for regional bank-to-bank transactions. While Fiserv has not yet disclosed specific transaction volumes or the total supply of the coin, further details regarding the rollout are expected at the upcoming B3 Forum in Medora, running from Oct. 5 through Oct. 7.

This deployment marks a significant milestone for Fiserv’s broader digital asset strategy, which was first unveiled in 2025. Beyond the Roughrider Coin, the platform is designed to support future capabilities such as stablecoin card issuance, cross-border payments, and treasury automation. The company continues to position its infrastructure as a bridge between traditional banking ledger systems and blockchain-based settlement rails, leveraging its existing network of 10,000 financial institutions.
