Ethereum Economic Zone Completes First Atomic L1-to-L2 Transaction

The Ethereum Economic Zone (EEZ) framework has successfully executed its first atomic transaction between the mainnet and a layer-2 network. By bundling operations across execution layers, the test demonstrated a potential path toward synchronous composability, allowing actions to either complete or revert collectively rather than remaining fragmented across disparate bridge infrastructures.

The demonstration involved a cross-chain call carrying 0.001 ETH alongside a rollup state update, marking a shift from theoretical design to on-chain execution. Developed by Gnosis and Zisk with backing from the Ethereum Foundation, the EEZ framework aims to mitigate liquidity fragmentation by enabling rollups to interact directly with Ethereum smart contracts within a single transaction. This bypasses the traditional reliance on independent bridge protocols, which often impose separate liquidity pools and asynchronous waiting periods.

While the mainnet test confirms the technical feasibility of atomic execution, the project remains in an early, unaudited stage of development. The current architecture relies on off-chain state computation verified on-chain, with interfaces and storage layouts still subject to revision. Gnosis Chain is positioned to be a primary testbed for this technology; GnosisDAO has approved a transition plan that would migrate the chain into an EEZ rollup, with an initial deployment targeted for late 2026 or early 2027. This transition will initially utilize an interim proving setup with a centralized composer, with full bidirectional composability and real-time zero-knowledge proofs scheduled for implementation throughout 2027.
